Group Post: Conventions of Film Noir

Task-
What techniques are used in the film Noir?

Why do you think they were used?

· Use of low key lighting which contrasts light/dark images and dramatic shadows. This creates an eerie atmosphere and fits well with the genre.

· Low angles shots with a wide angle lens portray status and the surrounding area.

· Lighting is used effectively by partially covering characters faces implying they wish to be unknown or keeping their identity hidden from the audience.

· The use of crime and other similar lines of action grabs the audience’s attention whilst and leaves them with anticipation for what is going to happen next.

· The use of mirrors creates confusion for the audience therefore maintaining their attention.
